Age alone may not be the only thing deciding when a woman hits menopause, according to a new study published in medical journal PLOS ONE. Researchers led by Dr. Amber Cooper at Washington University in St. Louis found that exposure to chemicals found in many beauty products can hasten the onset of menopause by up to four years.
The study followed 31,575 US women, whose blood and urine were tested for the presence of various chemicals found in fragrances, plastics and cosmetics, including phthalates and plant-derived estrogens. The women with the highest levels of the chemicals started menopause anywhere from two to four years earlier than those women with lower levels of the chemicals. The researchers also found that increased exposure to the chemicals over time led to problems with ovarian function.
So what can you do to protect yourself? Start reading product labels closely, and choose brands that don’t contain synthetic fragrances. These chemicals often show up on labels as “fragrance” or “parfum.”
Here are some of MiddleSexy’s top choices for phthalate-free cosmetics, including anti-aging, moisturizers and tanning lotions.
